Notre compatriote Soulamane KONKOBO est bénéficiaire pour l’année 2018-2019 du prestigieux programme d’échange Fulbright dénommé Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship.  Après 10 mois de séminaires intenses, de participation à plusieurs événements professionnel et culturel et de services de volontariat à l’Université de Boston et à travers les Etats-Unis, le représentant du Burkina Faso a clôturé son programme en Juin 2019 sanctionné par un Certificat en développement économique et leadership qu’il est venu présenter à SEM l’Ambassadeur du Burkina Faso aux USA, ce mardi 11 Juin 2019 à Washington DC. Il a été félicité par l’Ambassadeur et son équipe qui lui ont demandé de mettre les connaissances acquises aux USA au service du développement du Burkina Faso.

Après un stage à l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour le Développement Industriel (ONUDI) à New York, Soulamane KONKOBO retourne au pays avec l’ambition d’apporter son appui à la promotion de l’entrepreneuriat et au renforcement des capacités de la jeunesse et des femmes. Il pense que le Burkina Faso regorge d’un énorme potentiel dans le domaine des produits agricoles naturels qu’il peut échanger avec les Etats-Unis avec beaucoup de succès. En outre, l’innovation et l’industrialisation, qui sont des caractéristiques principales de la ville de Boston sont des domaines que notre compatriote compte promouvoir grâce aux réseaux qu’il a pu établir tout le long de son séjour aux USA.

When you are promoted into a role where you are managing people, you don’t automatically become a leader. There are important distinctions between managing and leading people. Here are nine of the most important differences that set leaders apart:

1. Leaders create a vision, managers create goals.

Leaders paint a picture of what they see as possible and inspire and engage their people in turning that vision into reality. They think beyond what individuals do. They activate people to be part of something bigger. They know that high-functioning teams can accomplish a lot more working together than individuals working autonomously. Managers focus on setting, measuring and achieving goals. They control situations to reach or exceed their objectives.

2. Leaders are change agents, managers maintain the status quo.

7 Things You Need To Stop Doing To Be More Productive, Backed By Science

In effect, if we use our time efficiently we can have more spare time to rest, to devote to our loved one and even be more creative! I have made the resolution to work productively and not profusely! 

Working smarter, not harder, is the key to better results

When I was 17 years old, I used to work and study for about 20 hours a day. I went to school, did my homework during breaks and managed a not-for-profit organization at night. At that time, working long hours landed me countless national campaigns, opportunities to work with A-list organizations and a successful career. As I got older, I started to think differently. I realized that working more is not always the right, or only, path to success.

Sometimes, working less can actually produce better results.

Consider a small business owner who works nonstop. Working hard won’t help him compete with his corporate competitors. That’s because time is a limited commodity. An entrepreneur could work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but his or her competitor can always spend more money, assemble a team and spend a lot more collective man hours on the same project. Then why have small startups accomplished things that some larger corporations couldn’t? Facebook bought Instagram, a company with 13 employees at the time, for one billion dollars. Snapchat, a startup with 30 employees, was turning down offers from Facebook and Google. Part of each of their successes was based on luck, and some on efficiency.

The key to success is not working hard. It’s working smart.

There’s a notable distinction between being busy and being productive. Being busy doesn’t always necessarily mean you’re being productive. Despite what some might believe, being productive is less about time management and more on managing your energy. It’s the business of life. It’s learning how to spend the least amount of energy to get the most benefits. I personally learned how to reduce my work week from 80 hours to 40 hours, and get a lot more work done in the process. For me, less is more.

Here are seven things I stopped doing to become more productive.

1. Stop working overtime and increase your productivity instead.

Have you ever wondered where the five-day, 40-hour work week came from? In 1926, Henry Ford, American industrialist and founder of Ford Motor Company, conducted an experiment with his own staff:

He decreased their daily hours from 10 to 8, and shortened the work week from 6 days to 5. As a result, he saw his workers’ productivity increase.

The more you work, the less effective and productive you become over both the short and long term, states a 1980 report from The Business Roundtable titled “Scheduled Overtime Effect on Construction Projects.”

In an article for AlterNet, editor Sara Robinson referenced research conducted by the US military which revealed that “losing just one hour of sleep per night for a week will cause a level of cognitive degradation equivalent to a .10 blood alcohol level.” You can get fired for coming to work drunk, but it’s acceptable to pull an all-nighter.

Irrespective of how well you were able to get on with your day after that most recent night without sleep, it is unlikely that you felt especially upbeat and joyous about the world. Your more-negative-than-usual perspective will have resulted from a generalized low mood, which is a normal consequence of being overtired. More important than just the mood, this mind-set is often accompanied by decreases in willingness to think and act proactively, control impulses, feel positive about yourself, empathize with others, and generally use emotional intelligence.

It’s important for us not to overwork ourselves and get enough sleep to maintain a high level of productivity. Next time you’re wondering why you may not be working productively, the reason may be simple as you being deprived of adequate sleep. (James Maas, a sleep researcher and expert, revealed that at least seven out of every 10 Americans don’t get enough sleep.)

On a personal note, since I started getting at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, I’ve noticed a change: I became a lot more productive and got a lot more work done in comparison to when I worked 16 hours a day. Who knew sleeping was such a great tool for marketers?

2. Don’t say “yes” too often

According to the Pareto principle, 20 percent of the effort produces 80 percent of the results; however, 20 percent of the results consumes 80 percent of the effort. Instead of working harder, we should focus primarily on the efforts that produce the majority of the results and forgo the rest. That way, we have more time to focus on the most important tasks. Stop saying “yes” to tasks that yield little or no result.

So what should you say “yes” to? And when should you say “no”? If you can’t figure out if something is going to be worth your time, consider running a simple split test. Consider tracking everything you do, and the time it takes to complete each task, and the results. Then go back, assess your list to see what did (or didn’t) prove fruitful, and take your findings into consideration to optimize for future tasks.

Most of us say yes more often than we should, for a variety of reasons, including guilt and overstretching ourselves, but also because it is so much easier than saying no. Nobody wants to be the bad guy.

In a 2012 study published in the Journal of Consumer Research, researchers split 120 students in two groups. One group was trained to use the phrase “I can’t” when discussing the specific choices, while the other was trained to use “I don’t” in framing their decisions.

The students who told themselves “I can’t eat X” chose to eat the chocolate candy bar 61% of the time. Meanwhile, the students who told themselves “I don’t eat X” chose to eat the chocolate candy bars only 36% of the time. This simple change in terminology significantly improved the odds that each person would make a more healthy food choice.

Next time you need to avoid saying yes, use “I don’t” in your refusal, to reinforce the helpful behavior of saying no to things that aren’t worth it.

Another great trick is to avoid activities that don’t add enough value to your life is the 20-second rule: For activities you shouldn’t be engaging in, or negative habits you want to break, add an element of difficulty, adding on a 20-second roadblock, so to speak, to you starting that activity. For example, if you’re trying to use lessen your use of social media, delete the tempting apps from your phone, so that it takes you another 20 seconds to find your laptop to access them. By adding in an inconvenience, you’ll be less likely to engage with that draining activity or habit.

Lower the activation energy for habits you want to adopt and raise it for habits you want to avoid. The more we can lower or even eliminate the activation energy for our desired actions, the more we enhance our ability to jump-start positive change.

3. Stop doing everything yourself and start letting people help you

At some point in my career, I was managing a very large community and couldn’t handle it all myself. I burnt out, and the community ended up taking over and managing itself. Surprisingly, members did a better job than I could have ever done on my own. I learned the power of community and why brands need user-generated content.

Consumers understand what they want and how they want it better than any marketer does. Did you know that, according to Octoly, user-generated videos are viewed 10 times more than brand-generated videos on YouTube? When seeking information about a particular brand, over half (51 percent) of Americans trust user-generated content more than what’s on the brand’s official website (16 percent) or media coverage on the brand (14 percent). It’s important for marketers to open up and seek help from the brand’s community itself.

Being a great content marketer is not about creating the best content, but building a great community that will generate high-quality content for you.

It’s important for us to realize we can seek help when we need it. Sometimes it’s impossible to do everything ourselves. It‘s better to let someone, or a team, share the work, giving you more time to focus on the most important tasks. Instead of wasting time and energy overloading yourself or trying to do it alone, let others share the burden and help.

Often times, even if your friends or coworkers can’t help you, simply having them around can help you become more productive.

Just having friends nearby can push you toward productivity. “There’s a concept in ADHD treatment called the ‘body double,’ ” says David Nowell, Ph.D., a clinical neuropsychologist from Worcester, Massachusetts. “Distractable people get more done when there is someone else there, even if he isn’t coaching or assisting them.” If you’re facing a task that is dull or difficult, such as cleaning out your closets or pulling together your receipts for tax time, get a friend to be your body double.

4. Stop being a perfectionist

“We found that perfectionism trips up professors on the way to research productivity. The more perfectionistic the professor, the less productive they are,” Dr. Simon Sherry, a psychology professor at Dalhousie University who conducted a study on perfectionism and productivity, told University Affairs. Dr. Sherry found a robust correlation between increased perfectionism and decreased productivity.

Here are some problems associated with being a perfectionist:

  • They spend more time than required on a task.
  • They procrastinate and wait for the perfect moment. In business, if it is the perfect moment, you are too late.
  • They miss the big picture while focusing too much on the small things.

Marketers often wait for the perfect moment. In doing so, they end up missing it.

The perfect moment is NOW.

5. Stop doing repetitive tasks and start automating.

According to a research study conducted by Tethys Solutions, a team of five people who spent 3 percent, 20 percent, 25 percent, 30 percent and 70 percent of their time on repetitive tasks, respectively, reduced their time spent to 3 percent, 10 percent, 15 percent, 15 percent and 10 percent after two months of working to enhance their productivity.

A week ago, I spent 15 minutes writing a basic Python program. The idea was to generate content from the data, which I pulled from Twitter API using a Ruby bot, and then using Hootsuite to bulk schedule the content. While this task used to take me an entire day to accomplish, it now takes me less than five minutes thanks to automation. Nowadays, whenever I find that I’ve done something more than five times, I ask myself if I can find a program to automate it for me.

You don’t have to be able to code to automate your repetitive tasks. It’s nice to have the skills or the resources, but it’s not a requirement. If you cannot build it, buy it.

People often forget that time is money. People usually do things manually because it’s easy and requires almost no research. It’s manageable to moderate 30 images on Instagram for your user-generated campaign. But if you have to manage 30,000 photos and videos from five different platforms, you need a good digital asset management software. 6. Stop guessing and start backing up your decisions with data

If you can optimize websites for search engines, you can optimize your life to grow and reach your maximum potential.

There are countless research studies that can offer insight on optimizing your productivity. For instance, did you know that most people are more easily distracted between noon to 4 p.m.? This was the conclusion that came from research shared by Robert Matchock, an associate professor of psychology at Pennsylvania State University. But even if you can’t find data on a particular question you might have, it doesn’t take a lot of time to run a simple split test and examine your own results.

7. Stop working, and take some time to do nothing at all.

Most people don’t realize that when we are too focused on something, we’re essentially locking ourselves in a box which can end up being counterproductive to our work or the results we’re chasing. It’s important to walk away from work once in a while and have some alone time, which is good for the brain and spirit, according to “The Power of Lonely,” from The Boston Globe.

One ongoing Harvard study indicates that people form more lasting and accurate memories if they believe they’re experiencing something alone. Another indicates that a certain amount of solitude can make a person more capable of empathy towards others. And while no one would dispute that too much isolation early in life can be unhealthy, a certain amount of solitude has been shown to help teenagers improve their moods and earn good grades in school.

It‘s important to take time for reflection. We often find the solutions we’re looking for when we’re not actively searching for them.

It’s also important to understand that we don’t become more productive overnight. Like everything in life, it requires effort and practice. Change doesn’t happen just by sitting around and waiting for it. Instead, take the time to learn more about your body and find actionable ways to optimize your energy and time for a more successful and happier life.

L’efficacité économique au service de l’intérêt général

Souvent, dans l’esprit tant du décideur que du citoyen, le monde reste divisé en deux images caricaturales : d’un côté, des associations utiles et dévouées, mais « peu professionnelles » et subventionnées ; de l’autre, des entreprises « sérieuses » et performantes, mais peu soucieuses des enjeux sociaux et environnementaux.

L’entrepreneuriat social remet en cause cette vision réductrice et dépassée. Il ouvre une voie nouvelle dans laquelle il est possible de conjuguer efficacité économique et utilité sociale, liberté et solidarité. Les entreprises sociales savent en effet combiner le sens de l’intérêt général, la performance et l’efficacité de la sphère économique avec la mobilisation et l’innovation des citoyens.

Elles le font en apportant des réponses concrètes et novatrices aux besoins sociaux, aux besoins fondamentaux des personnes (être en bonne santé, travailler, se nourrir, se loger, se déplacer…). Comme toutes entreprises, elles doivent dégager des excédents, mais pour elles, le profit n’est pas une fin : c’est un moyen au service de leur projet social. Elles créent de l’emploi, innovent et partagent équitablement les richesses qu’elles produisent.


L’entrepreneuriat social suscite l’intérêt croissant des acteurs politiques, économiques et académiques1. Et de plus en plus, celui d’entrepreneurs en quête de sens. Mais globalement, le modèle de « l’entreprise sociale » reste encore méconnu, suscitant même parfois méfiance et perplexité. Ainsi, certaines questions demeurent récurrentes :

L’entreprise sociale est-elle subventionnée et constitue-t-elle donc une concurrente déloyale ? Quelles différences avec l’entreprise “classique” ? Cela peut-il dire que les autres entreprises ne sont pas sociales ? Responsabilité sociale des entreprises (RSE) et entrepreneuriat social, est-ce la même chose ?» Ces questions, toutes légitimes, témoignent d’un déficit de visibilité et de lisibilité.

En fait, l’idée de l’entreprise sociale est simple et intuitive : utiliser l’entreprise et la création de richesses pour répondre efficacement à des besoins sociaux. Mais en pratique, elle adopte une pluralité de finalités, de formes juridiques (association, coopérative, mutuelle, SA(RL), SNC, etc.) de modèles économiques, de tailles, de secteurs d’activité, qui rend difficile son évaluation quantitative et son appropriation par l’écosystème économique et politique – et au-delà, par l’ensemble des citoyens.

Sa transversalité, sa diversité, le manque de données chiffrées précises et avérées2, en font encore un objet politique et médiatique mal identifié.

Les entreprises sociales sont des entreprises à finalité sociale ou sociétale et à lucrativité limitée

(Profits réinvestis dans le projet, rémunération limitée du capital, échelle des salaires encadrée). Ces entreprises cherchent aussi à associer leurs parties prenantes à leur gouvernance. L’entrepreneuriat social est un mouvement jeune qui s’est affirmé, à la fin des années 1980, des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.

En Europe, cette idée naît au cœur même de l’économie sociale, sous l’impulsion de l’Italie : c’est là que s’y crée, en 1991, un statut spécifique de « coopératives sociales » qui se développent alors fortement, notamment pour répondre à des besoins mal satisfaits par les services publics. De nouvelles dynamiques entrepreneuriales, à finalité sociale, émergent alors dans d’autres pays européens, dont la France.

Aux États-Unis, de nombreux acteurs développent l’idée : la Social Enterprise Initiative, lancée en 1993 par la Harvard Business School, est suivie par d’autres grandes universités (Columbia, Yale…) et des fondations qui mettent sur pied des programmes dédiés aux entrepreneurs sociaux, notamment Ashoka, pionnier du sujet.

Outliers is credited with popularizing the research that led to formulating the 10,000 Hour Rule for achieving mastery in any subject through deliberate practice—even though practice has since been shown to be merely a component of what it takes to become an expert at your craft. What’s most beautiful about Outliers though, is that the book seeks to answer a simple question, “What makes high-achievers different?” Gladwell believes that we pay too little attention to successful people’s culture, family, generation and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

Overall, this has been the most influential business book throughout my life—and I come back to read it every year. I credit it with fueling a lot of my initial inspiration for learning how to start a blog and multi-bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell‘s writing style is still one of my primary influences. In the book, Gladwell focuses on finding groups of successful people and uncovering exactly how they achieved their level of professional or personal success.

He argues that success is closely connected to opportunity and the amount of time people spend practicing their craft. He presents a compelling case that the reason more people aren’t experts is that since it takes so many hours to master something, most people simply don’t have the patience to devote that kind of time to perfecting a skill. On top of that, Gladwell also talks about the necessary components for finding (or creating) meaningful work, which inspired my first guest post ever—on the Buffer blog and led me down the path of pursuing side businesses as a means to creating more meaningful work in my life.

5. Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport.

This is one of those business books I picked up and started reading because I needed to reaffirm my commitment to not allowing myself to get distracted by chasing the wrong opportunities and spending time in other ways that don’t help me achieve my most meaningful goals. Many of the principles covered in this book helped me refine my opportunity management system for being more productive while wearing the many different hats it takes to be a content marketer, blogger and course creator on a daily basis.

Shark Tank star and Fubu Founder, Daymond John embodies this in true form through his origin story within The Power of Broke. In this business book, he discusses how to get scrappy and how to leverage the tools, relationships and resources at your disposal to build a successful business on a small budget.

He emphasizes how starting a business when you’re broke forces you to think creatively and use your limited resources efficiently. It forces you to be innovative. Even more importantly, he explains how he’s intentionally placed resources constraints on himself over the years & how that’s helped him make the most of what he’s had. The Power of Broke is just as applicable to first-time entrepreneurs as it is seasons veterans. Start with Why grew out of a TED talk delivered by the author, Simon Sinek, which has become the third most popular TED Talk ever. It’s built around the question, “Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential and more profitable than others?” This business book’s basic premise is that the leaders who have had the greatest influence, act and communicate in the same way—which is the opposite of how most people function.

Sinek calls this idea, “The Golden Circle,” and it all begin with the question, “Why?” Interestingly, the reviews for this business book are very polarizing. Readers either love it or hate it. Personally, I love it. I think the harshest reactions and reviews come from readers who have difficulty viewing themselves objectively, taking in critical feedback and translating it into positive changes in leadership. It’s much easier to blindly continue on down the same path… What do you think?

This business book provides a new approach to successfully managing a startup and also talks through some of the innovative online business tools that can help you accelerate your path towards validation along the way.

If you’ve read my blog before, then you know how big a fan I am of utilizing motivational quotes to get myself re-focused in times of self-doubt and help look back to the greater purpose of what I’m building. Well, this business book by my friend, Jeff Haden, takes motivation to a much deeper level. Haden argues that motivation isn’t a magical formula that we need at the outset of any major change, challenge or endeavor. Rather, motivation is a result of process, not a cause. If you’ve ever felt let down by self help books and “proven” success strategies that’ve failed, then this business book is a must-read that’ll bring you practical advice to stop stalling and start actually working on your dreams.

11. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson.

The title alone sold me on this business book, but it’s been recommended to me by several friends. This New York Times Bestseller is built around the core argument, backed by academic research, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn “lemons into lemonade,” but on learning to stomach the lemons better. It’s about setting realistic expectations for ourselves. Embracing our fears, faults and uncertainties to begin finding the courage, honesty, responsibility we seek. I can’t wait to dive into this one.

One of the things I like most about this book is how the author, Mark Manson‘s personal writing style truly reflects the title of the book. What reads as 2 parts deep life advice and 1 part comedy, keeps you engaged and anxiously anticipating what comes next—especially when listening on Audible. Another thing I love about Manson’s style is that he doesn’t give a shit about respecting industry jargon or business slang—he actively makes fun of it.

12. The Hard Thing About Hard Things: Building a Business When There Are No Easy Answers by Ben Horowitz.

This is one of my favorite titles I’ve ever seen for a business book. Author Ben Horowitz is a co-founder and general partner of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. For many years he wrote on a personal blog, giving down to earth business advice and sharing his experiences on building and running startups. For this business book, he’s adapted most of his original posts and compiled them into an incredible narrative about how to navigate the inevitable difficulties when starting and growing a business (especially on the side of your day job).

Horowitz analyzes the problems that confront leaders every day, sharing the insights that he’s gained along the way. He tells things straight, covering topics like starting a business with friends, firing those friends when things aren’t working out, poaching competitors and cultivating a CEO mentality. Perhaps what I love most about The Hard Thing About Hard Things is that he amplifies the stories with lyrics from his favorite rap songs.

13. The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg.

I remember when The Power of Habit especially grabbed the attention of readers in the U.S. as it was released in 2014. It topped most of the bestseller lists and spent more than 60 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. In this business book, Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the edge of scientific discoveries, explains why habits exist and how they can be proactively changed to create positive results in our lives.

In this business book, Duhigg emphasizes how important habits are to our success. Habits are the essential keys to achieving meaningful goals. It’s our good habits that give us the structure and discipline to exercise regularly, be more productive and continue making progress towards our larger life goals. Without good habits, it’s all too easy to give up when the going gets rough. This business book will give you the foundation for creating success-driving habits.

14. So Good They Can’t Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love by Cal Newport.

This is the second business book from author Cal Newport that made my must-read list of the year (for a very good reason). So Good They Can’t Ignore You is based around the philosophy I agree wholeheartedly with, that “follow your passion” is some of the worst advice we’ve ever been told. Even more importantly, that following this bad advice and then failing at your “predetermined” passion can lead to anxiety, chronic remote job hopping and in the worst case depression due to lack of achievement.

In this business book, Newport argues that true passion is discovered only after you put the hard work into developing a strong skill—an ability that you in turn love to use because you’re truly great at it. It’s actually your natural talents and refined skills that should determine your career path or the type of business idea you start working on in the first place.

15. Money Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom by Tony Robbins.

Tony Robbins is internationally famous on the world’s speaking circuit for his inspiring speeches, transformational workshops and courses. More than 4 million people have attended his live events over the past couple of decades. As Robbins shared with me in an interview last year, he believes wholeheartedly that success in business has more to do with psychology than skills, experience or any other single trait. He explained, “Business success is 80% psychology and 20% mechanics. And, frankly, most people’s psychology is not meant for building a business.”

In this business book, Robbins turns his attention to how we can improve our lives through more effective money management. He gained insights from interviewing 50 top financial experts, his own experience growing a multi-billion dollar business and has created a 7-step process to follow for moving towards financial freedom in Money: Master the Game. Reviews are pretty mixed and it seems to polarize readers. The common thread seems to be that many struggle to make it through the first 50 pages, but those who make it past that point love the books message by the end. Personally, I’d definitely recommend it.

16. Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It by Chris Voss and Tahl Raz.

Imagine the pressure you’d be under if the highly delicate negotiations with a kidnapper were dependent on your negotiation skills. Get it right, the hostage goes free and you’re the hero of the moment. Get it wrong, the hostage is harmed and you become the villain—in your own mind at least. In this unlikely business book, author Chris Voss knows the feeling all too well.

He knows what it’s like to be in this type of situation. Voss is a former international hostage negotiator for the FBI, has faced off against bank robbers and terrorists, then ultimately became the FBI’s lead international kidnapping negotiator. In Never Split the Difference, he shares the skills that helped him succeed—and how those strategies can be used to become more persuasive as an entrepreneur.

17. Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters.

This business book takes a close look at the power of innovation. PayPal founder and first Facebook investor, Peter Thiel shows how we can still go about creating new things. Which I completely agree with—we haven’t invented everything yet. In Thiel’s opinion, we are actually living in an age of technological stagnation because everybody is blinded by shiny objects and new gadgets. There’s more to innovation and progress than what computers and Silicon Valley have to offer—and many of the best business ideas are still out there waiting to be built.

The key to progress, according to Thiel, is learning to think for yourself. When you do something new, you are moving from 0 to 1 (hence, the title). His thesis in the book is that the next generation of successful entrepreneurs will make completely new things—not just updates of our existing products. In this business book, Zero to One, he lays out how to train yourself to be an innovator.

18. The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell.

This business book, another from Malcolm Gladwell is his argument that there is a magic point at which a business idea, a movement or something similar crosses a threshold of adoption and begins to spread like wildfire. It may be a small iPhone app that skyrockets to the top of the App Store charts in one weekend and ends up becoming a global phenomenon. Why do things like this happen? They cross a tipping point.

Gladwell argues that there are particular personality types that deliberately work to push ideas to the tipping point. These include trendsetters and the world’s great salespeople (all of whom employ one of the best CRMs in order to succeed, mind you). In this business book, Gladwell discusses what these magical people do in order to naturally find the tipping point and gives readers practical strategies for replicating their success. This includes his three rules for creating your own Tipping Point: The Law of the Few, the Stickiness Factor and the Power of Context.

19. Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.

You may wonder why a book about the U.S. Navy SEALs is on a list of best business books. In one word: Leadership. Through their experiences with a SEAL unit in the battlefields of Iraq, authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin learned firsthand that SEAL team leadership training is the best in the world–whether that’s in combat or in business. As an entrepreneur, developing your leadership skills is one of the most important factors in determining the success or failure of your venture.

Extreme Ownership takes the lessons these authors learned on the battlefields and applies them to other real-world situations, especially business. Each chapter takes a principle that a great leader has demonstrated and shows how the principle works in practice.

As the book’s title suggests, the key to successful leadership is that a team leader needs to take ownership for everything their team does. There is nobody else to blame; you take personal responsibility for your team’s failures and reap the rewards when your team succeeds.

20. Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products by Nir Eyal.

In Hooked, Wall Street Journal bestselling author Nir Eyal takes a look at why some companies and individuals are able to consistently create products that take off from day one and capture the public’s imagination, while others launch new products to the sound of crickets.

In this business book, Eyal explains what he calls The Hook Model, which is a four-step process successful companies follow when creating products that subtlety encourages (and rewards) consumers to behave in a desirable behavior for the company. Tech companies and games like Facebook, Twitter and Candy Crush that perfectly follow The Hook Model are able to create products that bring consumers back again and again without the need for expensive advertising.

21. Traction: How Any Startup Can Achieve Explosive Customer Growth by Gabriel Weinberg and Justin Mares.

In this business book, authors Gabriel Weinberg and Justin Mares pull from their own experiences building and selling multi-million dollar companies to teach other entrepreneurs how to find and focus on the right growth levers that’ll scale their businesses quickly.

Traction presents the compelling argument that the key to success in business isn’t just coming up with “the best idea,” having a brilliant team, or raising more funding than your competitors. Business success is directly related to how consistently you can acquire new customers (or users) for your product or service—a serious challenge if this is a side hustle idea that doesn’t get your undivided attention. That’s true traction and once you’ve unlocked your growth lever, it makes everything else significantly easier. When you have traction, you can raise funds on your own terms, hire the best talent, garner press, establish partnerships and sell to whomever you choose. Traction is proof that your business is on the right track.

22. How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie.

Carnegie covers much more than just trying to convince people to agree with you in this book. It’s a guide for how to get along with people. It also shows that if you want to get along with people, you have to be genuinely nice to them and show an interest in their lives.

23. The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business by Josh Kaufman.

He believes that the only person you can fully believe in is yourself. One side effect of this “Brave New World,” is that it’s easier than ever to turn your own strengths, skills and interests into a business where you can employ yourself.

Altucher focuses on helping you improve your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing while finding your way towards uncovering potential business opportunities you’ll be uniquely qualified to pursue. In this business book, he asks why you would put your trust in others who don’t care about your future as much as you do—and gives you the tools to take control of your own life.

25. Purple Cow, New Edition: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin.

Influence teaches you how to master these principles of persuasion, as well as how to identify when others are attempting to use these tactics on you.

27. Rich Dad Poor Dad: What The Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! by Robert T. Kiyosaki.

I consider this business book to be centered mostly around financial advice and author Robert Kiyosaki claims it to be the #1 personal finance book of all time. Interestingly enough, it seems to polarize most readers. People either feel that it has revolutionized their way of thinking about finances or alternatively feel that it takes 200 pages to tell a message that could have been told in 20. Here’s what I think: It depends on what your baseline knowledge about personal finance is at the time you start reading Rich Dad Poor Dad—and if you’re towards the beginning of your journey to personal finance mastery, Kiyosaki’s message can lead to big breakthroughs.

In this business book, Kiyosaki focuses on how you should let your money work for you, rather than spending your life working for your money. He also emphasizes that you should avoid placing your money into objects, possessions and investment instruments that’ll cost you and incur more expenses in the long run, like flashy cars and big homes. The core message of this business book is that if you want to grow rich, buy things that generate income.

28. What If It Does Work Out?: Turn your passion into cash, make an impact in the world and live the life you were born to by Susie Moore.

What we need to know is how to change these biases and irrationalities so that we’re able to make more informed decisions that better benefit us in the long run. This business book gives readers a four-step process to counteract these biases and it shows us how to make stronger decisions.

Once you validate your idea, and if it’s viable, then you can grow your revenue, ensure your customers are happy (and come back for more) then continue building your business up at a manageable rate.

Here’s why they too feel so strongly about this: During the building phase, you still need a regular income to survive. The reality is that few businesses survive to see five years, so it’s foolish to risk everything right at the beginning before you have definitive proof that customers are willing to pay (and continue to pay) for your solution. Startup Opportunities is a practical guide to help you evaluate your business ideas. I’ve already read Robert Cialdini’s seminal business book, Influence, and this one is a fresh new take on how to master the art of persuasion. His key finding, surprisingly, is that persuasion is less about the content of what you are trying to persuade somebody about, and more about your timing. As with a good comedian, if you want to be an effective persuader, you need to master your timing perfectly. For you to effectively persuade someone else of anything, you first need to “presuade” them. I.e. you need to change the person’s state of mind before anything else.

The reason Pre-suasion makes my list of the best business books, is because it provides a phenomenal range of sales techniques that you can use to lay the groundwork for persuading someone to make a deal, or you can watch out for when someone is trying to use those techniques on you.

He ponders whether it was his intelligence that led to his success, or was it just plain luck? In reality, it was probably more that he had enough intelligence to know when he was getting lucky.

An interesting point he makes throughout this business book that it tends to be B-level students who create companies, who then employ the A-level students to help manage them.

59. The Barefoot Executive: The Ultimate Guide for Being Your Own Boss and Achieving Financial Freedom by Carrie Wilkerson.

This business book shows you how to overcome your fears, stand up for yourself, and give yourself permission to do what you really want.

For this business book, author Napoleon Hill studied the lives of many successful people and, based on his findings, came up with what he deemed to be the 13 key principles of success. To a large extent, the book is about convincing yourself you can become wealthy. One interesting statistic from the book is that 99% of the public has no goal in life and are stuck in jobs they don’t want. This was however, written during the Great Depression, so it would be interesting to see whether this statistic still holds true today.

63. The Champion’s Mind: How Great Athletes Think, Train, and Thrive by James Afremow.

This makes my list of the best business books because Dr. Afremow provides actual mental exercises and tangible skills to help create your own version of peak performance and to strengthen your mind for the challenges ahead. This business book is designed to help you to understand the psychology of excellence.

64. Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? by Seth Godin.

65. Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers by Seth Godin.

While this business book was published in 1999, Godin’s description of permission marketing has turned out to be an apt premonition of how marketing has had to move in the 21st Century.

In the pre-internet days, marketers came to you with their message, whether it be on the television screen, on the radios we listened to, or in the newspapers or magazines we read. This makes my list of the best business books because Godin argues in Permission Marketing, that consumers are no longer prepared to give up their precious time, to be served with advertisements. Instead, marketers need to give consumers incentives to accept advertising voluntarily.

Fast forward 18 years, and we can see that he foresaw the way of the internet and prevalence of having a well thought-out content marketing strategy in particular. Alas, he wasn’t able to convince all marketers of the uselessness of spam—the internet equivalent of old-style interruption marketing.

66. Developing the Leader Within You by John C Maxwell.

One of the problems people face, according to Dr. Maxwell, is that they are unprepared for failure. Why this makes my list of the best business books is because successful people still have their fair share of failures, but the difference is that they know how to deal with them; to learn from their failures, to move on and turn things around. They know how to take responsibilities for their failures and not blame others.

68. The 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization by John C Maxwell.

This business book is John Maxwell’s answer to the most common question he’s asked at his leadership conferences: “How can I implement what you teach when I’m not the top leader?” This is a very good question when you think about it. Most people have a boss they report to, which makes it more difficult to introduce new leadership practices.

Dr. Maxwell shows that you can still provide genuine leadership in middle management. You have the ability to demonstrate leadership in all directions—upwards (to your boss), across (to your peers), and downwards (to those you lead). Middle managers are in the ideal position to be full 360-degree leaders.

69. Winning with People: Discover the People Principles that Work for You Every Time by John C Maxwell.

If you can’t tell by now, I’m a big fan of John Maxwell’s business books. In Winning with People, Maxwell focuses on relationships. Everybody involved in a business has to build relationships with the people they come into contact with. Even a solopreneur owner has relationships with clients and anyone they need to work with like accountants, contractors, and legal advisors.

In this business book, Dr. Maxwell discusses the key principles of relationships, such as the Bedrock Principle, that trust is the foundation of any relationship, and the Lens Principle, that who you are determines how you see others. This business book can help you improve your people skills, and is thought-provoking for anyone who works with people.

70. The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness by Jeff Olson.

The premise of this business book is that if you can change your mindset and follow certain daily disciplines, you can radically change your life—which I’ve personally experienced as a result of reading this business books. The daily disciplines are simple productivity upgrades, but when you repeat them day after day, the results can be astounding. One of this business book’s philosophies is that, “difficult takes a little time, impossible only takes a little longer.”

If nothing else, this business book can put you in the mindset that you can do something big. Many of the principles aren’t earthshakingly original—but Jack Canfield tells them in a way that sticks in your mind.

72. The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life (Before 8AM) by Hal Elrod.

As the title suggests, it’s possible to start your day off in a manner that transforms your mentality about the work day.

Hal Elrod suggests you should wake an hour before you usually do and spend about 10 minutes doing one of these key intention-setting activities: meditating, saying affirmations, visualizing, exercising, reading something constructive, and writing. His hyper-enthusiastic demeanor will keep you engaged, and his tactics are very approachable, and there is evidence that this routine can make a huge difference to your well-being, which is why this makes my list of the best business books.

If you have high-powered connections, it is much easier for you to come in contact with key influencers, and to find the best network that will help you meet your goals. This business book is all about building quality connections, rather than simply building up as big a list as possible.

This states that you should keep in daily contact with your top 5 connections, weekly with your key 50 connections, and monthly with your most vital 100 connections. Sound like a lot? Well, that’s because it is—but this made my list of the best business books because of how important your relationships will be (for the years and endeavors to come).

75. The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks than Others Do in 12 Months by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington.

The 12 Week Year takes an interesting approach to planning. Rather than considering your business year to be a traditional 12 months, this business book suggests that you should plan for it being only 12 weeks. The argument is that if you think about the traditional calendar, you have peak times and slump times. With a 12-week time cycle, there will be no slack times, and you can remain focused for the entire period, celebrating your successes at period-end.

This is, of course, another goal-setting focused business book. But the focus here is on setting, following and achieving 12-week goals that’ll stretch you to deliver at higher performance (and focus only on the right allocations of your time). This means that you need to break down your bigger challenges into 90-day chunks. This makes my list of the best business books because it’s such a seemingly simple, yet highly effective concept. 12 weeks is neither so long that it seems distant and unimportant, nor so short that you immediately start to panic about your goals.

76. The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield.

There’s a timeless classic called The Art of War, dating from the 5th Century BC where renowned Chinese military strategist, Sun Tzu outlines military strategy and tactics. The fact that it is still required reading in many leadership and military courses after all this time says something about its importance. In this business book, author Steven Pressfield wrote The War of Art to do for the soul what Sun Tzu did for military leadership.

This business book is an essential guide for succeeding in any creative endeavor; how to ensure your head is in the right space as you engage in your creativity, how to avoid writer’s block, how to brainstorm your perfect business idea and then start bringing it to life.

Steven Pressfield believes our biggest enemy is “resistance,” and that it is inherent inside all of us. Resistance is our natural tendency to procrastinate and get distracted from what we really should be doing. He doesn’t just recognize resistance, though. He provides practical strategies to fight our internal resistance, which is what solidifies it’s place here on my list of the best business books.

77. Ignore Everybody: And 39 Other Keys to Creativity by Hugh MacLeod.

This business book grew out of cartoons on the back of business cards that Hugh McLeod used to draw as doodles while sitting at a bar. He moved on from the cartoons to a blog Gaping Void, and eventually wrote (and drew) this book. In it, he shares his insight into how people can improve their creativity.

This is one of those business books that polarizes readers. I think this very much depends on how much you like Hugh McLeod’s type of dry humor and simplistic drawing style. He isn’t PC at all, so if you’re the politically correct type, I would avoid this one—or if you are offended by frequent fucking swearing (clearly, I’m not). This makes my list of favorite business books because his tips are all about defending your creative spirit and your right to have it.

78. Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies by Jim Collins and Jerry I. Porras.

Built to Last is an enduring business book, and was first published back in 2004. It looks at 18 exceptional successful companies and analyzes them in direct comparison to their main competitors. The authors based their work on a six-year research project at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. They tried to determine what it was that made these particular companies successful, at the expense of their opposition.

The focus is very much on what makes a visionary company. Visionary companies are made up of many people who come and go, some of whom are visionary and highly talented leaders. Yet despite eventually losing their top talent and big names, these companies keep their vision. As the authors analyzed their data in this business book, they were able to shatter quite a few common success misconceptions.

79. Reinvent Yourself by James Altucher.

What I love most about Altucher’s writing style is that he’s not afraid to go down the rabbit hole when he encounters a question he feels his readers will have—this business book is no exception. In it, he describes specific strategies, chases down the answers to your fears & objections, shares personal stories, explains case studies in transformation from other entrepreneurs he’s interviewed and gives you the tools you need to master the skill of reinvention.

80. The Power of KM: Harnessing the Extraordinary Value of Knowledge Management by Brent N. Hunter.

Have you heard of knowledge management? Brent Hunter’s business book on this topic is a clear introduction to the subject and explains all of the basics of what knowledge management entails. It’s written for beginners, so don’t expect a textbook for an MBA graduate. It’s more aimed at managers who can take its ideas and put them into practice in their organization—in order to better your internal processes.

The key learning from this business book is that knowledge is power, and therefore knowledge management is extremely valuable to any entrepreneur or manager.

10 conseils pour booster votre motivation en tant qu’entrepreneur ?

Pour un créateur ou un dirigeant d’entreprise, la motivation est un facteur essentiel de réussite. Malheureusement, il n’est pas toujours facile de maintenir un bon niveau de motivation, car :

  • le processus de création est complexe et parfois déroutant,
  • les obstacles sont multiples, tant sur le plan administratif qu’organisationnel ou financier,
  • l’enjeu est important, ce qui peut occasionner un haut niveau d’attente et de stress,
  • l’entrepreneur agit le plus souvent de manière isolée,
  • le regard des autres (proches, entourage) peut parfois se faire pressant.

Tout créateur d’entreprise connait des hauts et des bas, les phases de doute succédant aux phases d’euphorie. Une baisse de motivation peut s’expliquer par le fait que l’entrepreneur n’a plus une vision claire de ce qu’il est en train de faire : il manque de recul donc de confiance en lui. Dans ce cas, le plus simple est de se remettre à la recherche de l’information qui éclairera la décision.

Tous les entrepreneurs connaissent des moments de doute et des instants de faiblesse. Cela est normal. Paradoxalement, c’est souvent dans ces phases de démotivation que les dirigeants prennent les meilleures décisions pour l’avenir de leur entreprise.

Comment se motiver en tant qu’entrepreneur ?

“Il n’est pas nécessaire d’espérer pour entreprendre, ni de réussir pour persévérer.”

Voici 10 conseils pour se motiver en tant qu’entrepreneur ou dirigeant.

1) Sachez pourquoi vous le faites.

Vous avez certainement créé votre entreprise pour redonner du sens à votre vie. Il est important d’assumer ce que vous faites et de cultiver vos valeurs. Repensez aux raisons pour lesquelles vous avez décidé d’entreprendre. Remémorez-vous vos objectifs fondamentaux, ceux qui doivent vous guider sur le long terme. Ils constituent la source intarissable de votre motivation.

2) Croyez en vous.

Malgré la richesse de leur vie professionnelle, beaucoup de personnes n’ont aucun recul sur leurs compétences et leurs qualités ; c’est aussi le cas pour les entrepreneurs. Pourtant, il est essentiel de faire le point sur vos connaissances et vos atouts. Sentez-vous légitime dans ce que vous faites, et prenez la place qui vous est due. N’ayez pas peur de la concurrence. Formez-vous sur vos points faibles. Il n’y a aucune raison que la réussite vous soit fermée.

3) Arrêtez de procrastiner.

Pour vous motiver en tant qu’entrepreneur, arrêtez de procrastiner. Il faut dans certains cas savoir se faire violence pour arrêter de remettre les choses au lendemain. Arrêtez de vous poser des questions, et faites ce que vous avez à faire. Avancez dans votre projet, et le chemin s’ouvrira de lui-même.

4) Retrouvez la passion.

Dans votre aventure entrepreneuriale, il y a certainement des choses qui vous procurent du plaisir ou que vous faites entièrement par passion. Sachez les identifier et les cultiver de manière à ce qu’elles deviennent la clé de votre réussite. A l’inverse, envisagez de sous-traiter les choses qui ne vous plaisent pas ou que vous pensez faire mal. Car dans tous les cas, vous ne pourrez pas tout faire !

5) Rompez votre isolement.

En tant que chef d’une petite entreprise, vous êtes bien plus isolé qu’un salarié d’une entreprise classique. L’isolement peut entrainer un manque de clairvoyance et donc un doute dans la prise de décision. Sachez vous tourner vers des personnes qui pourront vous conseiller (expert-comptable, ami, expert en création d’entreprise…).

Nouez des partenariats. Apprenez à travailler en réseau en tissant des relations de long terme.

6) Revoyez votre modèle économique.

La démotivation peut venir d’une trop grande énergie dépensée par rapport aux résultats obtenus. Ce décalage peut s’expliquer par un modèle économique trop peu performant : vous perdez du temps à faire des choses qui s’avèrent au final peu utiles.

Faites le point sur votre business model : identifiez votre coeur de métier et vos tâches importantes. Sous-traitez tout le reste. Concentrez-vous sur l’essentiel, et sur ce qui fera votre réussite.

7) Procédez par étapes.

Procéder par étapes peut permettre de réduire le stress et de diminuer votre niveau de pression. Fixez-vous des objectifs limités et progressifs, et tenez-vous y. Avancez pas après pas, en toute modestie. Chaque petite victoire vous mettra sur le chemin du succès.

8) Promettez-vous des récompenses.

Il n’y a rien de plus démotivant que de travailler sans en percevoir les fruits. En tant qu’entrepreneur, il est important de vous fixer des objectifs de récompense. Cela passe souvent par une meilleure rémunération : votre salaire ne doit pas être une variable d’ajustement mais un poste de dépense prioritaire.

9) Fixez-vous des règles.

Tenez-vous en à votre agenda. Ne remettez jamais au lendemain ce que vous pouvez faire le jour même. Ne vous éparpillez pas et ôtez tout ce qui parasite votre travail. Chacune de vos actions doit être productive, car c’est votre inefficacité qui vous démotive.

10) Economisez-vous et prenez soin de vous.

La création d’entreprise est une course de fond, et non un sprint. Sachez vous économiser, prendre du recul, et entretenir votre réserve d’énergie. Donnez-vous du temps pour y arriver. Sachez vous replier en cas de difficulté et profiter des opportunités quand elles se présentent. La persévérance est la clé du succès !



Entrepreneurs, comment avoir la bonne idée ?


Je lis pour vous cet article cette semaine de Maxime Valette, cofondateur de VDM, BetaSeries et de l’incubateur Netcats. – Robert Laffont / Ballade studio. Il est simple et nous rapproche encore de la réalisation de notre projet d’entreprise.

Si chaque expérience est unique, je dirai néanmoins que pour avoir  une bonne idée et la transformer en business , il y a quatre conditions essentielles.

1. Incarner son concept

Il faut qu’il vienne de vous, qu’il soit cohérent avec ce que vous êtes, avec ce que vous voulez construire pour le public. Lancer un projet et monter une entreprise est une aventure éprouvante : ne vous engagez pas dans un projet qui ne vous correspond pas.

2. Accepter qu’une idée ne se « trouve » pas

Une idée vient en réalité de quelque chose qui existe, d’un besoin. C’est pourquoi je pense qu’il est peu efficace de s’asseoir autour d’une table pour se dire : « Trouvons une idée pour créer une entreprise. » Je suis convaincu que très peu de bonnes idées peuvent émerger dans ce cadre. En travaillant ainsi, vous risquez de perdre du temps et de l’argent. Vous ne pourrez jamais imposer un concept à un public si vous l’avez seulement pensé dans une salle de réunion. Il faut être attentif. Lorsque vous détectez un besoin, commencez à penser au concept qui va y répondre.

3. Confronter un concept à une demande potentielle

Si vous vous lancez dans des domaines d’activités connus ou classiques, vous pouvez avoir recours à une étude de marché. Elle vous donnera des indicateurs sur les débouchés potentiels pour votre produit ou votre service.

Pour les projets très innovants cependant, le marché n’existant pas ou n’étant pas encore connu, l’étude de marché est de fait impossible. Il n’y a pas de données sur lesquelles vous pouvez vous appuyer et vous risquerez de construire votre projet sur de mauvaises bases. La meilleure solution pour tester votre concept dans ce cas-là, c’est d’aller à la rencontre de votre marche avec un service ou un  projet minimum viable (MVP) , de proposer son utilisation et de le faire évoluer en fonction des avis.

C’est plus au moins la méthode du  lean start-up  : vous confrontez votre offre au public, vous la testez et vous la faites évoluer en fonction des réactions de vos clients potentiels. Cela permet de construire une première communauté d’utilisateurs et d’adapter votre concept à la demande de ces derniers.

4. Ne jamais se précipiter dans un projet

Une idée ou un concept doit avoir le temps de mûrir, pendant quelques mois, parfois quelques années, et de trouver son public. Le potentiel d’une idée sera d’autant plus grand si vous faites preuve de patience – plutôt que si vous imposez votre offre à un public qui n’est pas prêt. Quand une idée émerge, ne mettez pas tous vos moyens dans son développement et sa commercialisation. Testez d’abord la réactivité de votre cible. Pendant cette période, réfléchissez au meilleur moment pour lancer le projet de façon plus ambitieuse : soit quand vous aurez parfaitement compris les attentes de vos utilisateurs et de vos clients, soit quand la demande aura suffisamment augmenté pour que le projet devienne rentable. De cette façon, vous pourrez construire un projet viable.

Pour résumer, menez un projet cohérent avec vous-même, faites évoluer votre concept en fonction des réactions des utilisateurs et adaptez-le à la demande. Laissez ensuite le temps au concept de mûrir et à votre communauté de se former.

I run a global business accelerator and from 2010–2018, our team interviewed over 6,000 entrepreneurs and leaders in the UK, USA, Australia and Singapore. We discovered a common journey that businesses go through time and time again. When we looked at the data, it was clear that this was happening across the economy.

Out of 5.7Million businesses in the UK, Over 4.3Million of them have no employees. Despite making up 76% of businesses, these early-stage businesses account for just 7% of business revenue. Conversely, there are just 40,000 companies in the UK with over 50 employees and these businesses account for over 60% of business revenue.

The beginning of the journey is hard and unrewarding and we need to plot a course for becoming the type of business that delivers results. I’ve observed that there are two outcomes to aim for on the entrepreneur journey – a lifestyle boutique (3-12 employees) or a performance business (40-150 employees).

Here are the stages in the Entrepreneur Journey: 

1. Startup. Every business began as a concept in someone’s mind, with excitement and nervousness in anticipation of launch. Working with ideas, plans, prototypes and skill sets, someone created a vision, expecting rewards of money, more meaningful work and increased freedom. It was brilliant in their mind and so they began.

3. Struggling boutique (3–12 people with low revenue-per-person). A small team begins to form and the roles become more focused. The struggling boutique is able to pay basic wages but it’s not very profitable. It defines itself by geography (e.g. Brighton Pizza Shop, Tampa Bay Printing) and fails to develop many assets mostly trading time for money.

4. Lifestyle boutique (3–12 people with high revenue per person). A small, dynamic team with relatively low overheads but a high-energy culture forms. The team self-organises, has fun developing digital assets that reach people globally and the business looks much bigger than it is. The owner receives better income than they could get at a corporate job with more freedom, greater impact and less stress. This type of business often centres on a ‘Key Person of Influence’ who’s known, liked and trusted in their industry.

5. The desert (13–40 people). During this scaling phase, the business is too big to be a small boutique and too small to be a big business. The overheads increase with additional staff and investment into growth. The business requires leaders, managers and technicians but can’t afford these roles. Although the fundamental business is sound, it becomes unprofitable, and investing in long-term projects kills cash flow. Culture is damaged as it is pulled in two directions – the flat structure of the past vs the professional culture of the future. It needs to either grow or shrink fast before it runs out of cash.

6. The factory (40+ people with low revenue per person). Adding a high headcount without improving revenue per person creates a stressful business known as a factory. The business is always on the edge of a financial cliff as payroll ticks over month by month. There’s no money to reward the high-performers and they leave, and there’s no money for research and development so things stagnate. The business begins a cycle of cutting back overheads and eroding the few assets it once had.

7. Performance (40–150 people with high revenue per person). This is a dynamic team of professionals working with high-quality business assets. The business is almost unrecognisable from the lifestyle boutique it once was. The culture, brand, systems and products have all shifted up a gear and the business now serves more markets and territories. There’s healthy profit from well-developed strategic assets (mostly digital or intangible). The business owners can either hold on and enjoy the profit or exit for a life-changing amount of money.

8. Unicorn (250+ people with ultra-high revenue per person). This is a performance team that was in the right place at the right time with the right opportunity and access to lots of funding – like Facebook, Uber, Tesla and LinkedIn. They receive a lot of attention and achieve soaring valuations in a short timeframe. These businesses are almost impossible to replicate, although thousands of copycats try.

9. The corporation (250+ employees and established in the market). This big, established, bureaucratic beast has lots of assets and many people working to sweat or improve them. Corporations used to enjoy a gilded position because not much could dethrone a business with global scale and strength. More recently, every corporation has needed to think like an entrepreneurial team or risk being disrupted by a fast growth performer or unexpected unicorn. The money flowing around corporations is now fair game for ambitious entrepreneurial teams.

Knowing these predictable phases can guide you towards the business you want. If you are an entrepreneur with a level head, your real choice is to focus on either a lifestyle or a performance business. Unicorns require so much in the way of luck and deep pockets that it’s impossible to plan them and no one want’s to be alone in the wilderness or sweating it out in the desert.
